Two anglers fishing in a tournament on Lake Cumberland early Sunday morning were involved in a single boat accident. The father, Donnie Flynn, 70 of Pulaski County, was killed when his boat struck a rock embankment. The son, Derek Flynn, a Somerset Police sergeant was also thrown from the boat and sustained critical injuries. He is being treated at UK Hospital for injuries which have been reported to include a fractured pelvis.

Tragically, the father and son team were fishing a benefit tournament in support of another officer’s special needs son when the accident occurred. When they didn’t return to shore Sunday morning, the organizers called authorities around 4 a.m. Their boat was found capsized near the embankment. Other anglers reported to investigators of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife that dense fog made boating very difficult because visibility was so limited.

Investigations are being conducted by the KDFW.
