APPLICATIONS
I’ve used the Rapala PXR Jowler 127 for around two months now, and I’ve found a few specific scenarios where this bait really shines. Being a topwater walking bait, this lure excels in all the traditional topwater scenarios. This includes low light situations, overcast days and prefrontal conditions. This lure is also ideal whenever bass are keyed in on gizzard shad, herring or other types of sizable baitfish. What really sets this bait apart from the competition is its cupped mouth.
The cupped mouth featured on the PXR Jowler causes this bait to spit water in each direction as it walks across the surface. This not only creates added disturbance on the water, but it allows you to work this bait at various speeds, while still receiving quality action.
I love this lure for fishing around both visible and submerged cover. The spitting action allows you to work the bait right in the strike zone without moving it far distances, perfect for calling fish out of brush. The added disturbance caused by the cupped mouth is also ideal for stained water or calling fish in from increased distances.
JOWLER SETUP
The Rapala PXR Jowler 127 is 5 inches in length and weighs right under 1-ounce. Given its slightly larger profile, I use a heavier rod than I would on some topwaters. I prefer a slightly longer rod with a medium heavy action and a moderate tip. This increased length and stronger backbone is perfect for making long casts at schooling fish, while the moderate tip is great for playing fish back to the boat. One of my favorite rods for throwing the Rapala PXR Jowler 127 is the 7 ‘2 medium-heavy Shimano Expride B Casting Rod. This rod has the perfect amount of flex and backbone to catch any sized bass on this presentation.
For a reel, I prefer a lightweight frame with a high gear ratio. Whenever I throw a topwater I’m constantly burning it back to the boat or casting at schooling fish. This high gear ratio allows me to pick up line at increased speeds, ultimately making me more efficient on the water. Furthermore, throwing a walking-style topwater for long periods can be tiring.
