Hair jigs have been around forever. Initially, they were made from deer hair, most of which were of the smaller variety and mainly used for panfish. We made our own and we called ours crappie killers and man did they catch them. Bright colors were common; our best ones were yellow with a head painted with model paint and we poured our own heads using handmade molds. They were light 1/4 ounce or so and were hard to cast. Those days are over and the new ones grew in size and can be used on a variety of fish. They also cast well even in the wind.
Recently, hair jigs have been the rave although many try to keep them secret and used in conjunction with forward-facing sonar applications they help weed out the little ones. The best weights seem to be 1/2 ounce or heavier. Natural and synthetic hair combos with tinsel/feathers are the norm and larger profiles are the rule now.
