Crankbaits are an effective way to get down, fish fast, and get bass schools fired up when they’re setup on deep grasslines. . Elite Series pro Josh Bertrand is a deep crank guru and he shares his system for using them to locate and catch bass off grasslines. One of the most important things for this application is having the right rod. While crankbaits are typically fished on a softer rod, Josh points out that for fishing around grass, you need a stiff rod to be able to sharply jerk and free the bait when hung up. A stiffer rod also allows for greater casting distance to cover water and get the bait running at the right depth longer. Line diameter and crankbait selection are also important in dialing the perfect running depth.
