So you’re faced with spooky post-spawn bass spread out across a large shallow grass flat. Areas like this are prime frogging country, but it’s easy to spook fish or bypass them altogether. Chris Zaldain shares some proven tips for using hollow body frogs to find and catch bass relating to emergent grass in the midday sun.
TACKLE USED:
- Megabass Big Gabot Frog
- Megabass Destroyer Valdivia Casting Rod, 7’6″
- Seaguar Smackdown Braid, Stealth Gray 65lb
- Shimano Curado 200K Casting Reel, 7.4:1
One of the biggest bass fishing misconceptions is that topwater baits only work well during low-light periods. The fact is, high sun concentrates fish in predictable areas ready to ambush prey. Zaldain focuses efforts on areas of difference such as points or holes in the grass. A quality frog casts a mile, stealthily fishing around cover without snagging, and has excellent drawing power to pull bass out of shade pockets.
