Topwater walking baits are one of the best lures for covering water fast when looking for active bass, but some models also perform well when “spot fished,” similar to a popper. Brent Ehrler explains the importance of varying your retrieve speed with walking baits, specifically, slowing them down and pausing for extended periods.
TACKLE USED
- TOPWATER LURE – Lucky Craft Sammy 108
- FISHING ROD – 7’2″ Daiwa Tatula Elite Casting Rod
- FISHING REEL – 6.3:1 Daiwa Tatula Elite Casting Reel
- FISHING LINE – 30-pound Sunline Xplasma Asegai Braid
Like a topwater popper, a horizontal-sitting walking bait excels at calling bass up in calm conditions, especially when they’re relating to isolated cover elements. In this case, Ehrler’s preferred Lucky Craft Sammy 108 can be worked steadily fast or with interspersed pauses, all the while sitting horizontally when at rest.
