Ranger's cover easy to lift and secure

8/18/2008 12:16:59 PM
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Rick Huddleston knew his plan would work to help protect boats and offer anglers another advertising venue for their sponsors.

When he showcased one of only two prototypes last week at the Forrest Wood Cup championship, Huddleston got the response he'd been looking for. The new boat cover, mounted on spring-loaded hinges, was quite a hit among the pro and recreational anglers who saw it.

"We've had a lot of people stop and ask about it, a lot of favorable comments," said Huddleston, who is a design engineer in the Ranger Boats trailer division. "They hauled it 850 miles from Flippin to here without a hitch and no telling how many people saw it on the way through three or four states."

A hard-shell boat cover is nothing new, but efforts in the past have failed for various reasons. One of those, Huddleston said, was the repeated submersion of hydraulic pistons used to lift or lower the shell. Other problems doomed previous efforts.

But this one, which still is being tweaked, could be a hit. Huddleston's unit employs a pair of gas pistons on each side of the lift hinges, and torsion springs at the base that is attached to the trailer. You use a strap at the rear to pull it down and it secures with a latch system over a 2-inch machined trailer hitch ball on a locking post in the rear deck seat hole.

It secures over the trolling motor and has a spray skirt for further protection from the elements, whether in storage or while driving. To raise the shell, simply unlatch the ball lock (and turn off the optional alarm system) and lift the lid.

"I started this in June 2007 and drew it all on the CAD system to make sure everything fit before we started," Huddleston said. "By November we had a prototype. There are 19 different things we can patent and we still have a few things to change that are minor, such as making sure water drains off the rear of the lid into the splash well instead of the deck. But those are pretty simple changes."

Obviously, you'd have to remove the butt seat and rear seat to close the cover. Huddleston also said they're looking at the console sonar units, which for now in storage mode have to be folded toward the windshield or removed.

Questions? Sure, there are a few Huddleston answered:

What about wind? "We've had it open in 30 mile per hour winds and had no effect. Anything I think would be normal conditions, you should be OK. Someone asked me about something like 60 mph winds and I said you probably needed to be off the lake and at home in that situation.

How much does it weigh? 240 pounds for the fiberglass shell, and about 250 pounds of steel for the internal support tubing, hinges and securing mechanism. The gas lift system makes lifting the shell easy, though.

What if you hit a bad bump driving? The shell locking mechanism fits into a 2-inch trailer hitch ball machined down and attached to a post mounted in the rear deck seat hole. The post allows the cover a small amount of movement. The shell won't come loose or rattle off, Huddleston said, but they are going to do more intense testing.

How do you launch or load? At the ramp, just lift the shell and back into the lake, and when you park you can secure the lid or leave it up. When you load up, lift the shell fully, back in and drive on the trailer.

How much room is there? If it's raining, you could lift the shell and sit in the boat to work on tackle. It might be possible also to add rod racks or a shelf to the top for lightweight items, but Huddleston said that's not in the plans for now.

Cost? Availability? Huddleston said it will cost about $3,000, which does not include the option internal lighting and alarm system, and may be available as early as January only for Ranger Boats.

"I think it will be really great for anglers who can use it for advertising their sponsors, for anglers who store their boats outside in winter and for overall protection," Huddleston said. "These guys who have had their boats broken into at tournaments, this could have prevented that problem."

Overall, a very fun show

Fun Zone
FLW Outdoors always has touted itself as being family-friendly and last week proved that in spades, with a wide variety of fun activities and events at the FWC Outdoors Show and Fun Zone.We can’t list everything, but here are some of the cool things we saw:

- The Jack Link’s Beef Jerky Ford F-650 Super Cruzer truck is a monstrous vehicle and they were giving out free jerky just about everywhere. Sasquatch, from the television commercials, was on the scene, too.

- Kids could make a Japanese “gyotaku” folk art fish print at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources booth. Gyotaku is a process of applying paint to the dried fish and pressing paper to it for a lifelike, unique image. The DNR folks were using clay fish, but the kids didnn’t mind.

- “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” from Fox Sports broadcast from the Colonial Center on Saturday, with hosts Charissa Thompson, John Salley and Chris Rose donning FLW Outdoors sponsor jerseys for the show. It was broadcast from the weigh-in stage and included most of the University of South Carolina marching band, South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier, former Clemson and Chicago Bears star William “The Refrigerator” Perry and 18-year Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt.

Spurrier was first on the show to be interviewed and, as Southern football coaches often are, was busy with scheduled appearances afterward. But we thought it was cool that while he was leaving backstage at the Colonial Center, Spurrier heard Perry was in front of the giant curtain waiting for his interview. Instead of leaving, Spurrier wheeled around and told the two university assistants he wanted to see Perry. He went back to visit with him – remember, Clemson and South Carolina are two ‘rival’ colleges -- for at least five minutes or more. Spurrier didn’t have to do that, but he’s a classy guy and that was a really cool thing to do.

- Among the fishing lures and other goodies, one we really liked is the Venom Lures Dream Craw, which has several cool features.

First, the 4.25-inch craw has a ribbed body-tail that provides great rigging with jigheads, Texas-rigs, Carolina-rigs or as a jig trailer. The ribs displace water, help reduce the descent and create bubbles. The realistic head has two long tentacles on a tapered nose, just like a crayfish, with a pair of wide pincers. These are textured, though, and that helps them grab water and flap or undulate when you twitch, pitch or pop the rod. The end of each pincer also is separated, further adding to the action.

They come in 14 great colors (our favorite is Green Pumpkin Mustard) and are available at www.venomlures.com along with some other cool products.

Tanks in the street

8/18/2008 8:37:48 AM
We hung out for a while with the South Carolina National Guardsmen displaying the stunning M1A1 Combat Heavy Tank, M2A2 ODS Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the OH58 surveillance helicopter on the city street in front of the Colonial Center.

Awesome pieces of machinery our troops use at home and abroad, and you realize that moreso when you’re standing under the 120mm canon of the M1A1 tank or beside the 35-year old helicopter that will be put to pasture next year.

Some neat info about each piece of machinery:

- The M1A1 Heavy Tank features the 120 mm cannon and can hold a crew of four that includes the driver. It weighs 72 tons and costs $2.34 million.

- The M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle can hold a crew of three along with six fully-equipped soldiers and has a bit more firepower than the M1A1. The Bradley has a rocket launcher, 25 mm gun and weighs 33 tons. It has a cost of $1.32 million.

- The OH58 on display at the show has been in use with the South Carolina National Guard for homeland security including search-and-rescue, drug investigations and weather-related assistance. It seats a crew of four, is outfitted with a FLIR detection system and “night sun” light for spotlighting and was put into service in 1973. The display copter has approximately 5,400 hours of flight time and no longer will be used after next year when new models replace it and three others in the unit’s fleet.

The guardsmen we talked with are passionate about their commitment and respect for their job and country. We appreciate what they do for Homeland Security and overseas in different parts of the world, wish them safety and Godspeed.

Great, affordable boat

8/18/2008 8:35:23 AM
One of the cool things about the FWC is seeing the new boats from Ranger and Stratos, and this year’s 25th anniversary Stratos 294XL Evolution is a sweet ride.

It comes in at 19 feet 6 inches, has a 91 inch beam and is rated for a 200 hp outboard, which is plenty enough power for this size boat. It has a 36-gallon fuel tank and good storage area for rods, tackle and other gear.

The show display model has several options that push the price to $37,579. But one good thing about today’s boating industry is you can just about pick, choose and select which options you want and come up with something to fit your budget.

Hey, what a set of hardware!

8/18/2008 8:30:46 AM
Anyone dropping by the Yamaha Outboards exhibit could not miss the incredible display of championship trophies in the center of the tent.

We’ve seen all the guys who have won the trophies in the last six years and know them well. But it’s still pretty awesome to be able to get an up-close look at so much championship hardware won by the Yamaha prostaffers in the last few years.

Here are the trophies we saw and the anglers who won them:

2002: Jay Yelas, Land O’ Lakes FLW Angler of the Year and Bassmaster Classic

2003: Yelas, the Busch BASS Angler of the Year; Mike Iaconelli, Bassmaster Classic

2004: Takahiro Omori, Bassmaster Classic

2006: Iaconelli, Citgo Bassmaster Angler of the Year; Luke Clausen, Bassmaster Classic

2007: Scott Suggs, Forrest Wood Cup championship

2008: Alton Jones, Bassmaster Classic

PowerBait is 20 years old!

8/18/2008 8:24:08 AM
If you’re an angler and haven’t at least heard of Berkley PowerBait then chances are you’ve been living in a cave with the Jack’s Link beef jerky sasquatch.

It’s hard to believe 20 years have passed since this incredible bait hit the market, but it’s true. For two decades anglers have fished with PowerBait worms, grubs, trout baits and other lures that help put fish in the boat. The combination of realistic baits and the PowerBait formula is hard to beat.

“Keith Jones comes up with the formulas that fish like to eat and John Prochnow figures out how to put those formulas into the baits,” said Pure Fishing public relations manager Eric Naig. The solid lineup of pro anglers on the Berkley team offer their input into lure creations, and with Jones and Prochnow mixing in their research it all turns out great for anglers.

Naig said the most popular thing in the PowerBait lineup is the trout bait, which “is like crack for trout. They love it.” On the bass side, the 7-inch worm is the most-preferred lure by anglers, with the 10-inch worm right behind it.

Palmetto hunters, anglers unite

8/15/2008 10:35:04 AM
With a reported $1.8 billion spent in South Carolina annually by hunters and anglers, the need for an action committee for wildlife issues has been met with the formation last February of the South Carolina Camo Coalition.

Twenty charter members include the Tri-State Bass Club, South Carolina Bass Federation, Midlands Striper Club, Trout Unlimited and another 16 hunting and wildlife organizations. All combined they represent more than 100,000 people and that doesn't include supporters who aren't members of any organization but believe sometimes it's best to band together for a cause.

These agencies and outdoorsmen banded together in an effort to bring attention to issues in the Palmetto State when the need arises. It may be a "small" local issue, small being relative of course, or a statewide issue that needs to be addressed with politicians or business leaders.

The new organization was patterned after a similar effort in Georgia. Fifteen South Carolina legislators joined the Camo Coalition founders at the news conference this year to announce the new group.

We've used Kevin VanDam's Line & Lure conditioner now for a few years on our fishing lines and believe it's a great product, but Rob Faddis had to show us a new tip.

Faddis said the conditioner works great on sunglasses to help minimize water spotting and reduce glare. It's aggravating to get a few drops of water on your lens, then smudge them around with a dirty shirt. Worse is getting the grime around the edge of your glasses mixed with the water, which creates a semi-oily film on the lenses and reduces your acuity.

With a couple of spritzes of Line & Lure conditioner, Faddis let the shades air dry. Then he wiped them with a dry cotton rag and the lenses were nice and clean.

"It reduces the glare and helps prevent dust and water buildup," he said. "I swear, there have been times when I could see maybe two feet under the water and I've cleaned my glasses, and I could see more clearly when I looked in the same spot."

Faddis also makes a great product called BTS, for "Bow to Stern," which is an all-surface protectant for your boat and vehicle. It works on gel-coats, vinyl, plastics and metal to prevent ultraviolet ray damage, eliminate stains from mold, mildew or bugs and restore the sheen to your ride.

Smack Bait gets in the swim

8/15/2008 10:30:58 AM
Steve Brown and Mark Ladyga knew they had something good when their swimbaits began gaining traction with the anglers in Oregon fishing on the Columbia River.

"We had guys telling us they caught 60 to 75 smallmouth a day on them," said Ladyga, who with Brown are the owners of Smack Bait! Lures based in Bend, Ore. "We've caught fish on them everywhere we've been."

Brown said the swimbaits "have caught 18 species that we know of" and they're still getting reports about them from satisfied anglers.

The baits come in three sizes - 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 inch - and are available in 11 great colors. They're basic colors, such as alewife, shad, hitch, anchovy and smelt, which cover just about any lake or saltwater area you'd like to fish.

The cool thing about them is the design. The bait is pliable but firm, if that makes sense, and has a rounded nose, flat head and textured body tapering to a big thumping tail. The top of the body has a deep slot to hold the hook and a slit in the belly aids in rigging.

"They're designed so you can use a big hook without a weight, if you want to, and the bait keels itself on the retrieve," Ladyga said. "Our package also has rigging techniques on the back with different hooks."

Brown and Ladyga also own RodWrap, a soft rod handle wrap that gives you more grip. They've added GripWax to their lineup, which Brown said is sort of a moisturizing additive for winter, summer or when the wrap has been in use for a while.

You can see the swimbaits at www.smackbait.com, or go to www.betterwaysproducts.com for the RodWrap and GripWax.

Poor Boy's is growing

8/15/2008 10:28:51 AM
Shawn Straley knew he would have to do something drastic after his bass-crazy son, Mitch, won a 70-boat tournament as a teenager.

That was nine years ago and Poor Boy's Baits was created in the Straley's Indiana household. They started pouring soft plastics and other lures on their kitchen table and have created a company known in the Midwest with more folks learning about them mostly by word-of-mouth.

"I can't believe how far we've come," Mitch said Thursday at the FWC Outdoors Show, where Poor Boy's is one of several tackle sponsors at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. "I remember coming home from school and we'd have pegboard on the walls and baits everywhere."

Shawn, his wife Kim and Mitch all contribute to the company in different ways. Their dedication shows because they have a great series primarily comprised of soft plastics. Some of the lineup they're showcasing this week includes the Dixie Darter ribbed worm, Silly Rabbit swimbait, Darter jig, Frog the Bug, Magic Shakin' worm, Fat Darter and Magic Swim Pork.

The Magic Swim Pork grabbed our attention as as super little trailer for pitching or swimming jigs. It's 3 inches long, with a solid 1-inch body and two curled tentacles with little feet that thump.

"It's great on a quarter-ounce jig buzzing on or just under the surface," Shawn said, adding that the 4-inch Dixie Darter is quite versatile for all species. "A lot of guys rig it on a jighead and work it on the bottom, but you also can Texas-rig it or use it for a drop shot. Mitch likes to use a screw-in Florida rig sinker. There's no bad way to use it."

The Straleys also own LureCraft Industries, which has an extensive line of products for making your own plastics and blade baits.

Check out both companies at www.poorboysbaits.com and www.lurecraft.com, or www.tacklewarehouse.com for some of their products.

Patriot Chopper

8/14/2008 4:42:06 PM
The Army National Guard and OCC teamed up to create this beauty. The chopper features include a Minuteman air filter, an ammunition belt lines the handlebars, chrome M-4 magazines serve as struts, and an M-4 rifle is mounted on one side of the rear wheel. A list of every war and conflict the National Guard participated in since its founding in1636 is displayed on the top of the fuel tank.

Members of the media staying at the centrally-located Hampton Inn this week are in good hands with the FLW Outdoors National Guard team here as well.

We've had fun chatting with team members Melinda Mize Hooper, Jonathan Newton, Clifford Pirch and others each morning in the lobby. The fishing team represents the National Guard, which was honored during Wednesday night's welcoming banquet. The guard's 860,000-plus members are important to America and we're appreciative of their sacrifices and commitment.

Between the media and the anglers, both do a pretty fair job of wiping out the free breakfast each morning.

On with the show!

8/14/2008 2:52:38 PM
Part of the Forrest Wood Cup that so many fans enjoy is the free FWC Outdoors Show, which opens today at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Lincoln Stret.

Show doors open at 2 p.m. today and Friday, and then at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Giveaways are part of the fun, and the first 500 children through the doors today will get free Berkley fishing line and the first 500 on Friday will get a free tackle bag. Saturday's great gift for the first 750 kids is free Solar Bat sunglasses. Sunday's gift is a free rod and reel to the first 1,500 kids.

That's a lot of free stuff! FLW Outdoors sponsors also will be giving away items in their booths, making the entire show a family-friendly event.

Big folks aren't ignored, either. A fan age 16 or older will win a new Ranger Z-Comanche boat and Yamaha outboard on Sunday during a drawing at the weigh-in. That's pretty cool.

Did you know this?

8/14/2008 2:51:15 PM
Lake Murray is 78 square miles, with 50 square miles in Lexington County where Columbia is located at the heart of the state.

The lake's dam construction was begun in 1927 and the cost was $20 million. About 2,000 workers earned an average of 50 cents a day to create what was, at the time of completion, the largest earthen dam in the world.

Murray was named for William S. Murray, who was the chief engineer for the project.

Rain, rain go away

8/13/2008 3:32:28 PM
FLW Cup attendees woke up this morning to gray skies and the pitter-patter of rain in the area as a monster front moved through the Southeast.

No dangerous conditions or severe weather, thankfully, and the thick cloud cover was a nice break from the traditional wilting August heat and humidity. Temperatures are in the low 70s and the rain is steady enough to provide the area with much-needed water. But it's not hard enough to create flooding or muddy conditions on Lake Murray for the Thursday start of the Forrest Wood Cup.

Tonight's low temps are going to be about 62 with wind 5-10 mph from the north-northwest, and then Thursday's forecast from The Weather Channel has highs of about 89 degrees with sunny skies, a few clouds and wind 5-10 from the southwest. The weekend forecast has temperatures in the 90s with sunny skies and little chance of rain.

How will Murray fish?

8/13/2008 3:31:06 PM
Lake Murray is the great unknown for anglers this time of year, with shoreline vegetation providing cover for the bass but not as much as in recent years.

It wouldn't be surprising to hear about some anglers working the weedlines with topwaters, frogs, jigs and plastics this week. Nor would it be a shock to discover some are "swimming a jig" through the grass, a popular technique involving a quick, skittering retrieve just under the surface to create a jittering wake bass can't stand.Legendary pro Hank Parker of North Carolina said the FLW Cup field will find a challenge this week.

"It's a summertime tournament and those can be tough to start with, but you also have to factor in whether there is any current or movement of the water," Parker said. "The thing with that is being in the right place at the right time. I'm sure they'll have a good tournament but it will be a traditional summer event and could be tough."

With 77 pros and 77 co-anglers in the field, no doubt a wide variety of techniques and lures will be put to the test this week. It will be fun to find out what is being planned, how things work out and what emerges as the winning technique.

Interesting angler tidbits

8/13/2008 3:28:34 PM
Scanning the list of 154 anglers, we ran across a few interesting items:

-- Alabama pro Steve Kennedy wears an orange "AU" cap to signify his allegiance to Auburn University, which is ranked among the top 10 in several football rankings with the Tigers' season set to open Aug. 30 against Louisiana-Monroe.

-- Ron Shuffield and Spencer Shuffield of Arkansas are the only father-son combo in the field, Ron on the pro side as one of the legends of the sport and Spencer as a rising co-angler.

-- Pro contender Michael Rooke is from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., which is the home of the original London Bridge built in 1831. It was purchased for $2.4 million by two men who moved it from London, where it was sinking into the Thames River, and reconstructed it in Arizona.

-- Pro contender Nick Gainey isn't far from home, Charleston, which was the site of the beginning of the Civil War when Fort Sumter was fired upon by the Confederate army and captured 36 hours later. The Union fought four years before reclaiming it.

-- Longtime FLW pro Andy Morgan is from Dayton, Tenn., which in 1925 was the site of the famous State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, more commonly known as the "Scopes Monkey Trial." Scopes, a high school teacher, was charged with teaching evolution and the high-profile trial pitted legendary attorneys William Jennings Bryan for the prosecution against defense attorney Clarence Darrow.

-- Co-angler Todd Lee of Alabama won the FLW Tour co-angler championship in 1996 and 1998. His longtime friend, David Hudson, has finished in the top 10 four times. They are both from Jasper, near Smith Lake, and are making their 11th championship appearances this week.

-- Co-angler Justin Lucas lives in Folsom, Calif., which is home to the infamous Folsom Prison. It was immortalized 40 years ago by country star Johnny Cash with a live performance there. The ensuing album, "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, was ranked No. 88 on the Rolling Stone list of 500 greatest albums in history.

-- With baseball season winding down, it's fitting to note that co-angler Steve Redwine lives in Blue Ash, Ohio, and that's where you'll find a replica of the fan-friendly Crosley Field. The original field was the home of the Cincinnati Reds from 1912-70 before they moved into the ugly monstrosity known as Riverfront Stadium. One cool quirk about Crosley is the outfield was sloped toward the wall where today's "warning track" is located.
