You have a very 'active' site with short vids, lot's of color ads. I enjoy visiting. It would be good if the Vids were 'practiced' a bit before filming. Also, very important to show what they are throwing. They have names, but some of us Terrestrials don't know what they are talking about. Your site gives me Hope!

Hey Bobby. We actually talked about why we do that at times in the article Carolina Rig Tips for Cold Water Bass Fishing. We reverse the weight at times in rocky areas where our slip sinker keeps getting into crevices and getting hung. You flip it around and it will kick up off the edge of the rock. It makes it click and hop and jump around in the rocks which seems to work really well. I don't advise it for grass or wood. But it does well in rocky areas.

Didn't know exactly where to send this, but, how do you guys store your soft plastics? Currently, i have a soft sided tackle bag that is busting at the seams with worms, lizards, craws, etc. and was wanting something that organizes them and keeps them straight. Thought about putting them in hard cases, but just don't have the space in my boat. (too much junk already) thanks matt

I tend to follow Aaron Martens style of storing tackle in all hard boxes. I constantly take out and put in the different boxes I need as seasons  change. I also keep one Plano FTO bag handy that has a hodge podge of stuff I might need in a pinch.

Michael McILroy from Magnolia DElawre writes:

Why is it no one from DELAWARE ever gets on your winning list I have inter a lot of contest and never see anyone from DELAWARE get pick Thank you Mike

Because the drawings are random and we have no control over who gets picked. My guess would be a much smaller percentage of anglers from Delaware enter than say Alabama. If 3 people from DE enter out of 12,000 and 3,000 people from Alabama enter out of 12,000 there are 1 in 4,000 odds that a DE angler will be chosen where there are 1 in 4 odds that an AL angler will be chosen. The odds are what they are on any giving drawing. It's not something we control. There are several states that have never had a winner. That doesn't mean it's not possible as we just recently had winners from New Hampshire and Canada where we had not before.

One thing for sure is you have no chance in winning free tackle if you don't enter. We just want to share good tackle with folks. That's all the giveaways were ever intended to do.

Hey wired to fish I just wanted to say I love your site I think it's great it's helped me so much. And second Im a 13 year old boy who has poured his heart and soul into becoming a better angler with purchases of new tackle and reading tons of articles to get better. So it occured to me that I wanted to go pro when I'm older and I was wondering what i would need to do in order to achieve my dream such as fishing mentors and getting sponsered and what the pros and cons of this would be. So anything you can tell me about this would be great so thank you.

Our first advice would be to focus on the fishing and not the sponsorship side of things. It's great to be informed on available tackle and techniques, but there is no substitute for spending time fishing. We all grew up walking through the woods to our closest pond or creek and learning to fish. As we were able to get on bigger waters and into boats, the time spent honing casting, presentations and fluency with our equipment made our learning curve a lot faster on bigger bodies of water. Experiment all the time with your fishing.

The sponsorships come through hard work and nothing less. You need to prove yourself as a consistent angler. Then you need to have a savvy business background, a positive upbeat personality and be able to speak well to folks. Focus on your studies, especially English, writing, public speaking as well as business math, finances and legal type classes. Making a living as a professional anglers involves a lot more than knowing what lures to throw when.

Here are a few articles on the sponsorship front from our friend and contributor, Ronell Smith.

I searched your site but didn't find what I was looking for. Not sure if it might be there, or a new request. I know you do product reviews all the time on rods and reels. Have you ever done rod/reel reviews on some of the "house" brands for BPS or Cabelas? I know these companies do not manufacture their own gear and buy it from name brands. Just wondering for example on a Cabela's Prodigy reel....who makes it, have you done any reviews on it? Is there a similar "brand" look-alike that it was modeled after. I think this might be a well received review if not already done. Thanks guys! Steve

I am sure you have written something I have missed on the retirement of the Legend "Denny Brauer". Bass fishing will never be the same without him. I have been lucky enough to talk with him on countless times and he is one great, standup individual. The sport just dosn't seem the same without him. I will keep following it because there or still nothing but the best in BASS but I grew up as a life member since the 70's and Paul Elis, Cockren and others of the old school are the one's I read books buy to help me learn how to fish. I was the first in our group to master the jig and pig and I feel for sure that it was because I read Brauer's first book 5 or 6 times. Do you think any of these old guys would ever have moved in on Brauer like Johnatan Van Damn did on the Arkansas River? Never. The old bunch would never do such things. Or like when what's his name did on the border buy not letting Paul Elis fish the spot both had found in practice. I could go on but this is some thing the younger generation seems to like. Thanks for letting me vent, George

Hey guys, love your site. I am just getting into smallmouth bass fishing and I appreciate the info you have on your site, especially the videos. I have been a brook trout fisherman for over 35 years since that is what was prevalent in our brooks and rivers. But I am really looking at getting to smallmouth fishing in the Saint John river here in New Brunswick. Obviously the water temp here is different than in the States, so I guess the main question is, will baits here work the same as baits in the US. Also, the Saint John river has an amazing fishery: Striper, smallmouth, pickerel, muskie, eel, and heaven knows what else. If I am targeting smallmouth with somewhat lighter gear, can I avoid catching muskie on the same bait? I'd hate to lose 8$ lures on fish that are too big simply because my gear can't handle it. thank you, Paul Layden NB, Canada.

Thanks Paul for the kind words. For the most part, Musky like large lures so you will likely catch far less by using smaller smallmouth sized lures. Hair jigs, tubes, grubs will work well as will small crawfish crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jigs with trailers. I grew up fishing small Ozark streams for smallmouths and always targeted runs into deeper pools, current breaks, places where the current turned or changed directions or where the current pushed up against some cover like a grass bed. I stick with natural colors in clear water like green pumpkin, watermelon, etc. Hope that helps some. Thanks for the feedback!

Mike Lee from Phila. Pa. writes:
I wanted to share a story along the same lines of Shaw Grigsby helping out Gerald Swindle with a lure. I was Terry Scroggins Marshall on Day 2 of the Oneida Elite Series. Around the middle of the day, Terry and Shaw Grigsby came into close proximity of one another. Shaw was concerned about missing the Classic because he was struggling on Day 2. Terry first, gave Shaw a pack of the worms he was catching them on. Told how he was rigging it and fishing it. And then gave him a spot to go to.

A little later, Gerald Swindle pulled up. And also needing fish to make the Classic. G man only had 4 fish in the box at the time, and said he was running all over trying to get number 5. Terry said follow me. And he took Gerald Swindle to one of his best waypoints and told him where to cast. He then idles away to another spot. And about 5 minute later, we hear G man hooting and hollering because he just landed a good one.

Both guys made the Classic. Now Terry had about 15 lbs in the box and was in the AOY race, and in contention to win the Tournament. I think it's remarkable how much of a class act Terry is, and how he is willing to help out his fellow anglers. Risking his own standings by possibly running out of fish.He was a true professional to be in the boat with, and I had a blast. And it was truly a learning experience. Terry is a master at using Electronics to locate fish on off shore structure.

We have no plans to add a forum section to the site. We have a very active facebook page where we answer questions and comments. We also answer all the questions on our videos on YouTube. And of course we try to email back folks that send in feedback forms if they have specific questions about things related to fishing.

Daniel origene Martelock from Ottawa writes:
I would like to know if your contests can be won by Canadians? I looked through your list of winners and found no winners in Canada. Are your contests not subject to Canadians?

All of our contests are open to Canadians. We haven't had a winner because of the low percentage of Canadian entries. If we have have 10,000 entries in a contest and 100 are from Canada, that's a 1% chance we'll draw someone from Canada and a 99% chance of drawing folks from the U.S. We've shipped lots of decals and such to Canada, so there is no issue of getting the product to Can. winners. We also have several states that have never won either because of low participation. It's not an exclusion, it's just how the odds have worked out so far. We figure someone from Canada will win soon as we're getting more entries every time. It just hasn't happened yet. The drawings are random so we have no control over who wins.

Hello, is there any way you can maybe do a video on making a weedless football jig from scratch? Also how to powder paint? I always get the pour down right but when it comes to heating the head up with a heat gun it always melts down the weed guard, then i heard some guys paint it then epoxy the weed guard in. Thanks, Clifford

Yep. I've been pouring jigs and powder painting for more than a decade and can tell you unequivocally, it's easier to pour the head first then epoxy the weedguard in after. Just get some base hole pins to hold the spot while pouring. Then powder paint, the bake the powder paint, then glue the weedguards in.

I recently watched a video on Wired2Fish that Jeff Kriet did about using the Big Bites Cane thumper. He gave me some great ideas and did a nice job explaining where, when, and how to use that finese swimbait. I fished a club tourney this past weekend on Lake Chickamauga and gave it a try. Wow! My partner and I started out fishing some submerged grassbeds and within the first hour put almost 12 lbs. of bass in the boat. The fish were swallowing the Cane Thumper. It was almost unfair how easy it was to use and to see the results. A couple of our club members were fishing in the same area and got to watch us put on a show. Thanks Jeff! Your video sent us home with a 1st place check!

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy getting your post on Facebook, from there it always leads back to your website, keep the post coming. On another note, I just started tournament fishing last year after I purchased my boat (up graded from my canoe), it's a modified Jon boat that's now a small aluminum bass boat. Being that I don't have a livewell I modified a cooler to keep the fish in. Recently I left for a tournament and when I got there my livewell was gone when I got there, being it was a three hour drive I couldn't go looking for it, so I did a quick modification to another cooler and fished, though on the way home I found it smashed on the side of the road, I was able to salvage some of it, long story short, my new live well is missing one thing , a wired 2 fish sticker. I was jus wondering if it would be possible for you guys to mail me a new. It would be proudly displayed on my new live well, and yea I now know to tie stuff down on road trips. Keep up the Great work, Stephen

I recently read your article on the Bronzeye popper and was wondering if you all trim the legs any of fish it out of the pack? Great website!

Justin, We each have our preferences but we do tweak the frogs a little. Jason will trim 3-5 leg strands off, while Terry likes to cut all the legs to a shorter length. Both will cause the rear end to sit down more (the more rubber the more the frog sits level). With the rear end of the frog down more, the bait walks a little better. Jason also bends his hooks up just ever so slightly for added hooking area.

Right now all we offer in our store are 12-inch decals.  http://www.wired2fish.com/whatsup.aspx?articleid=6459

Will Lewis from Newark,De writes:
What size hook to use in a 10 1/2" worm or smaller. That's a problem I'm having

We recommend at 4/0 to 6/0 hook for a big worm. Most bass will hit a soft plastic worm at the head of the worm. The biggest thing is to make sure you have enough of a gap between the hook shank and the worm so the hook point has room to move when you set the hook. If you're not hooking fish, it could be you're not getting a direct pull on the hook. That can be because of too limp a rod or too much stretch in your line. Also you might need to wait and set the hook as you feel the rod begin to load as you take up your slack.

It takes practice so keep at it. Biggest thing is to reel down until you just start to feel the weight of the fish and then drive the hook point through the plastic into the mouth of the fish.

Thanks Bob. We appreciate you. We celebrate our fourth year this month. Although our first year was pretty quiet, our growth has been explosive the last two years. We'll be ranked in the top 30,000 of the 171,000,000 websites in the world sometime this same month! That's the top 0.01% of all websites in the world. Not just fishing. And we get to this point because of guys like you Bob. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our fishing site part of your daily life!

I would like to see an article over the winter that addresses what exercises an angler can do over the winter to avoid having those early season painful trips once the weather breaks up north here. You know those trips when your back feels like its about to blow up because you've been jerkbaiting all day! I never have an ounce of pain in the fall but man o man come spring backs, shoulders, weary legs, they all hurt.

Mark Mauldin from Knoxville, TN writes:
Love the site! I really appreciate your coverage of things serious bass fishermen want to know about. But, you misinterpreted the TN rule on umbrella rigs. The rule states that if there are more than three lures, if the hook size is bigger than no. 6 (which is a bluegill sized hook), only one lure can have a hook. If you only use three lures, then all can have a hook. You reported that 5 lures, three with hooks, was legal. That is not the case in TN. Just thought you might want to clarify.

Dan Daskus from Minersville,PA writes:
I love this site and check whats new on it daily and something I'd like to see is a user review section that would let the readers give their views of tackle that is reviewed by the wired2fish staff. If you wanting to buy a new rod or reel you could go to the site and see how everyone who used it feels about and help make a decision.

Tim Eifort from Eaton,Ohio writes:
I tried the donkey rig today on Oct.17, 2011, and caught 5 thats rights 5 doubles on it. It was the best fishing day of my life for a long time. Now I have caught more before but never so many doubles. I fished it on a Gloomis Mossback 6' 9" rod with Quantum PT 30 reel with 12lb Yo-Zuri line and a swimming fluke on one hook and a KVD caffine shad on the other. I fished it real quick and on the top, then would kill it. The best was 18", but they were all between 2 andd 4 lbs. This was all done on a 7 arc. pond that was suppose to be fish out. My total fish count was 22 largemounth for 5 hr of fishing. Thanks for the great tip and keep those line tight.

Great site, Tons of information... would love to see an article about fishing this time of year north of Kentucky. Most fishing articles concentrate on the southern area where the weather is warm and you still have a couple months left to fish. While us poor folks in the north are battling air temps in the high 40's already we are just hoping to get some more fishing before the year is over. Keep up the good work, Steve

I have trouble with your videos, they stop every 3 to 4 seconds and thus are hard to follow the subject the presenter is giving. I only have problems with your video presentations.

Hi George,
Our videos are streamed through YouTube. If you're having a lot of pausing then your internet connection is having a hard time downloading the video. One way to alleviate that is by clicking on the 720 or 1080 on the bottom right in the video player window and setting it to 360. That will load the videos in a lower resolution and thus a lot faster for slower connections.

Hope that helps!

Ken Bak from Buffalo, NY writes:
Wow!!! Is all I can say about the Legend Boat video. Terry it looks like your ready too try too run Nascar the way you handled that boat with such ease. The hairpin turns and my favorite the fast planeing too see where your going. The turning has a couple positive things like if your buddy sees a giant log floating and u don't that can save you a lot a trouble possibly a life going 74 mph and turn that quick away from obstacles. Nice Looking too going across the water to get too your spots too fish longer. Good Job Legend.

That was a great couple of segments Jason did with pouring and making jigs and then powder coating them and even putting fleck in the football head jig seems easy enough. I'm sure it takes a few times but if u do a lot of jig fishing this seems to be the best way to make your favorite colors and try different things u never know u just might come up with the next big jig color breakthrough and make a few bucks doing it. Great job Jason.

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks to Terry Brown and the staff at Wired2Fish for a great website! In my opinion there are three websites that a bass angler needs to check daily: www.bassfan.com, www.tackletour.com and www.wired2fish.com . These three sites have everything you'll ever need to know regarding bass fishing. I know Terry was very instrumental in getting Bass Fan off the ground and I wondered if he knew what he was doing when he left. He's proven again that where he goes, success follows! Terry, thanks for a great site, full of useful and fun information, you make the sport of bass fishing more fun and more accessible with your website and the interviews you post. My little company is struggling to keep above water as is much of the industry right now. Your reviews of products and the innovative way you preview products give everyone, from us "garage guys" to the folks at Pure Fishing a shot in the arm, a boost up the ladder, thanks! It never fails that every day that I go to your website and now watch your staff on TV I learn something new. This week I learned how important it is to know and learn how to net a fish. I know that you can hurt fish but I never even thought of when netting a fish wether it be a Bass or any type that you can hurt their fins. To us well that's like a broken arm, and I'm sure I know from first hand experience it hurts let alone the inconvienence. Also dropping a fish from high up in the boat can do a bit of damage. Great segment 4 too on the springtime tackle box. Man I'm gonna be in trouble when the wife pays my credit card bill. I had to buy a few things, like 2 tackle bags and some of those lures. I'll help keep the industry going. I'll just blame it on Terry & Jason.

Well you shown people that in a great fishery you can catch fish if you can stick out the weather and just keep looking. Sounds like a good week of fishing but just think how great it's gonna be in a couple of weeks. If anybody's planning to go fishing I'd go to Guntersville and print out Terry & Jasons week and how and where they fished. Made me feel like I was on shore watching. UGH!!

Joe Johnson from Cullman AL writes:
Hey Terry and Jason : have really enjoyed your "On Location" series this week on Guntersville...to me, this is the best kind of fishing article because its really all about getting out there, and dealing with the conditions on hand. Its kinda like "A Day On The Lake" that Bassmasters does, only better, as its more than one day, and its on a PUBLIC lake. Ok, I'll fess up...I really enjoyed this one because I fish on Guntersville. I had never fished a football head jig in prespawn until I read your article, and it saved me yesterday, actually had my best trip so far this year, caught 6 in 2 hours after I picked it up. Isn't that what outdoor writing is all about? Thanks again and keep the good work coming!

First time in my life I have ever received a gift for not winning a contest...YOU GUYS ROCK! And I haven't even mentioned all the info you provide to all of us fishing nuts. What really impressed me was I wrote in for a comment to a contest last month, allthough new to the website, I recieved an email back from you a day later thanking me, then several days later came a package in the mail with another thank you, as well as a gift and W2F sticker that now is on my Jeep Gr.Cherokee for all to see. You guys are the best. But even more than that, I posted a few comments on Face Book, and your Terry Brown the very next day sent me a friend request on the FB site. THAT'S A GOOD COMPANY! A company that will take the time to not only give us a great website, but actually go that far to treat me like somebody. I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

I want to share a brief story with you, and offer my thanks. A little over a week ago, I took my Father-in-Law (who also happens to be my fishing buddy) to a movie while my wife and some of her sisters took their Mom out for her birthday. When we returned to my In-Laws house, he found a Bass Pro ad for their big Fishing Event in his mailbox. We both had been planning on going to Bass Pro, and made plans to go and stock up on all of the necessities we could. We had a few beers and discussed our upcoming annual 4-day walleye trip to Lake Erie, and talked about previous trips, and wanting to spend more time fishing with each other this year- about as good a time you can have without actually involving the act of fishing. When I got home and checked my mail, I found 3 different lure catalogs, my most recent issue of In-Fisherman magazine, and a package from W2F containing a thank you note and some Suffix line. The perfect ending to the day. How can you top something like that? I know that Terry, Todd and Jason get a lot of thank you's, but I would also like to take the time to thank all of those people at W2F who help make their work possible, and a little easier. So here’s an extra thank you to Aaron and Pete, and a special thanks to Sheri, who filled in while Todd was out of town & sent me a thank you letter with some Sufix line. Thanks also to all those other people at W2F we never see or hear about who make it possible to enjoy this great site!

In response to "It's All Good According to Scroggins" I really enjoy reading articles like these on your site. It's cool to get an inside glimpse at the life of professional angler. We weekend warriors often envy their profession, mostly ignorant to the fact that it is a life riddled with hardship and unique challenges. The miles they drive, the hours put in on the road doing tournaments, demos, and appearances. Being away from their family and friends. The uncertain conditions they may face on a lake largely unfamiliar to them. Something simple like an electrical or motor problem, while an inconvenience for the weekend warrior can potentially cost these guys thousands of dollars, and ultimately their shot at the title. When they’re not on the road, they’re still hard at work preparing for the next season, getting sponsors lined up, etc. This business of professional bass fishing isn’t for the faint of heart, so I believe these guys deserve every penny they earn. It’s really great to see someone like Scroggins take it all in stride and be thankful for the life that chose him instead of getting mired down in all the ‘tough stuff’ that got him to where he is.

I just watched Terry's video on line selection and I agree 100%. There's no answer to "what is the best line?"... it's only "what is the best line for ME?". However, in my case, this has led to a bit of a problem. The best line I've ever found for me is Ironsilk. I can't find Ironsilk anymore! I love the ease of tying and the strength to diameter ratio! It was also super tough for fishing around rocks and through the weeds! Does anyone else make line similar to Ironsilk or do I need to start trying lines all over again? I have used braids before and it wasn't for me. I like a little more stiffness than you get from braid.

I won the contest for dinner with the pro's and i sat with these guys for a few hours with them talking with me like i had known them for 20 years (Truly down to earth and class act guys- which you dont find to often in sports!). I am glad to see a number of new companies flocking to join the Wired2fish crew, and I think that exposure through your site will increase their sales. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I actually do look to your site in order to try and figure out what products I should buy. I don’t have a lot of disposable income, but I probably average $20- $30 a month buying tackle. I believe in Wired2fish, and trust that they aren’t going to recommend junk. I have noticed that a lot of your new partners aren’t specifically bass-oriented, and I like that. I am a multi-species angler (which is my way of saying that when I catch something, I was trying to catch it), and look forward to a wider variety of information. I’ve been a big fan of Northland for several years, and I’m glad to see them on board with W2F. I already know they make quality products, and this only reinforces my belief that W2F promotes quality companies and quality products. I’m also glad to see your coverage extending to other fish species, as well. I’ve watched ‘The Next Bite’ for several years, and welcome the opportunity to gain more information from a wider base of knowledge on a wider variety of species. My only concern is that you might lose some of the die-hard bass anglers. Although the majority of people I know and fish with are multi-species anglers, I do know some who are very insistent that the only true angler is a bass angler. I hope that any loss of visits to your site caused by this attitude will be made up by those who truly want to expand their repertoire. As always, I want to thank you guys for doing a great job, and I’m looking forward to enjoying your site for a long time to come. Keep up the good work!

I was glad to see that Hummingbird received a patent for their side-imaging technology. it is truly unique on the market, and was a brilliant move on their part. I'm also glad that they are now a sponsor for Hook n' Look- another wise move. Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past few years, you know about Hummingbird's side-imaging technology, but Kim Stricker is actually able to show some of the neat aspects of the technology, and some great ways of using it that we don't always see on a 30 second commercial. Hummingbird is definitely the current forerunner in sonar technology, and it's going to be tough to come up with something that will top their invention.

I've recently won the Kicker Fish High Tail Lizard contest.  I fished the green pumpkin red rigged texas style on my home lake, Big Hill Reservoir and was pleased with the results.  Following post front conditions and 48 deg. water I managed 5 bites and 3 in the boat.  Although they weren't much in size I think this bait will have better results in the spring and I am looking forward to trying them then.  The plastic used in the High Tail Lizard is firm and so I was able to use one bait for all my fishing that day which is a plus to me as it will be to other fisherman as well.  I would like to see a craw type bait with the same features as the worm and lizard as I think this would be a hit with the jig fisherman.  I thank Wired2fish for another great contest and all the reviews and inside the industry news that you guys put out there.  This is one of the best sites on the web! Terry, excellent article “Are You Sick” we do have too much negativity right now and not enough positive. Thanks for the fresh perspective. More should take note!!

Bruce Bachlor from Cincinnati, OH writes:
I know I've already given my 2 cents in regards to Terry's recent comments on the negativity in the media, but I just wanted to spew out a few more comments. Terry, you are absolutely correct when you say times are tough. That is the reason why we should be more positive. Fishing is one of the most positive factors in my life, and I rely on the enjoyment and peace of mind that I derive from it to help make it through these times. I was hospitalized recently for several days, and the running joke was that I needed my new rod & reel at the hospital so I wouldn't have to bother the nurses- I could just cast and reel to get everything I needed. Fishing is all about enjoyment- those people that fish for a living do it because they enjoy it, and those of us who don't fish for a living wish that we could. I find myself turning to fishing, and trying to support anything related to fishing, more in these trying times because I need it, and because everyone else needs more support, as well. There is an old saying that we have all heard before-'A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work'. I don't believe this is true. I don't believe there is such a thing as a bad day fishing. I know that BASS, and FLW are businesses, and I also am aware that the many sponsors and manufacturers of fishing gear are trying to make a profit, also. I am probably a little naive, but I like to think that all of these organizations and businesses are linked by a common thread- the love of fishing, both as a sport and as a pasttime. People can preach about doomsday and the downside of the professional circuit and sponsorships, but I will continue to do what little I can to help, and I will continue to find the positive side, just as you do, Terry. Thanks for being a voice of reason and faith in a sea of discontent.

Jake deBin from Auburn, Alabama writes:

I am pleased, and definitely not surprised that this organization wants to portray the positive side of the industy, while maintaining a personal and friendly relationship with all who are involved in it. I know from experience that this is true for both your visitors, and your business contacts, and can tell you how rare and truly wonderful this is to find. Someone needs to give Terry a raise, or at least a few days vacation- it seems like he's always working. let him take a week to do some traveling, and maybe hang out and do some fishing, or learn a few pointers... Wait a minute- maybe I need his job? I'm willing to trade! Thanks once again for the positive outlook, and a great website. (Really- give the man a raise!)

Caught your Dippity Doo article and thought I would throw in my 2 cents. I have to agree that the Skinny Dipper was a well kept secret all last year. Several of the boaters I fished with in draw tournaments threw them, one of which threw a "White Trash" Skinny Dipper exclusively all day. This is now my preferred soft swim bait in water with some color. You can get pretty creative with some Skinny Dippers and a pack of Spike-It markers. Take some Watermelonseed Skinny Dippers put some orange on the cheeks, blue across the back and blue stripes on the sides with a little chartreuse in the tail, and in less than a minute, you've got a pretty good bluegill imitation. I've also used the blue back and a chartreuse stripe on the side on the White Trash color to make a "Sexy-Shad" Skinny Dipper. As always, a great site with the lead on all the current info and trends. Eric

I like the layout of the Classic on W2F. My Classic picks in no particular order:
KVD - How do you not pick KVD in any derby let alone the Classic.
Greg Hackney - Cut his teeth in AR, lives in LA, strong on a river system.
Scott Rook - Strong on the AR River, gut feel is that the Red River fishes a lot like the AR.
Billy McGaghren won the Open last year on the Red, he and Rook have fished a lot of the same water. Billy is a real nice guy, I met him a couple of years ago at a boat show, I am rooting for him on the Elite Series this year.
Bill Lowen - Ohio River guy, should do well. Seems like a top notch guy and a Classic win would really solidify his place on the tour.
Greg Pugh - Good power fisherman, he is my sleeper pick. If he was in it, I think K-Pink would have made a run for the money.

Those airboats spray the grass on Guntersville every year mainly in the creeks and coves with docks. I've even seen this floating drum chopper in the Roseberry area. They usually leave the grass on the main channel alone but this year alot of the main channel grass mats are missing. Looks like a different lake for this time of year. I don't think TVA sprayed in the favored areas. A bunch of the grass never topped out especially the milfoil in places. This is all from observation but who knows what TVA could be doing. Anyway, the lake is fishing a little different for this time year. The jig bite was short lived. You can still catch them on any of the patterns that work this time of year in addition to spring type patterns. The topwater has been phenomenal, big worms, spinnerbaits, lipless baits, jigs, crankbaits, and more are working. Finding a big bite maybe the only problem.

Hey Damon,,where you been buddy? Long time no see. Just read a nice response from Brett Mitchell on "Growing the Sport". Very good comments from someone that does have some insight and I appreciate his input. However, I'm not so sure it's so much about "growing" the sport right now as it is about "preserving" the sport. With our current economy, which many have never experienced before, and the effect it is having on sponsors and organizations it seems to me it's more about preservation and survival than "growing". Growth and preservation are two different animals even though they go hand in hand. Called balance. And I'm not normally a "glass half empty" guy. But I do try and be a realist. Simply a little more food for thought, nothing more.

I totally disagree with doing away of the co-anglers. Why do we want to make our sport just like every other professional sport. Thats whats makes ours so great and different. It gives the average joe a chance to fish with the best in business. What other sport in the world can a amatuer compete side by side with the best in the world. Thats what makes our sport awesome. Just the thought of someday being able to fish with KVD or Rick Clunn gets my blood pumping. Why take that away fom us. And the only reason is $$$$$$$. Thats ashame too. I know most of you will never fish these events, but for those of us who have I can say you don't have any idea what your missing. Been the best experiences of fishing career. I just also wish these pros would take a minute a think about why they are where they are. Its not because of some big sponsor or corporation. Its because of US AVERAGE JOE'S that buy their products and watch their shows. WE ARE THE REASON they are where their at. Now they want to get rid of us? Makes me pretty angry if you want my honest opinion.

Chuck Wood from Indy writes:
I like Pete Robbins solutions to the co-angler problem in the BASS elite series. Its time for BASS to do away with the co-anglers on the elite trail. One thing I might add is the pros could pay a observer fee to BASS for each day they compete to compensate observers for there time and that way it would be up to BASS to hire these people. Also agree no practice partners for these elite anglers !

Luke Downing from writes:
Coming from a tin boat to a Glass boat for me had a ton of great attributes...one of the major things for me was the better ride on the larger lakes that I fish in this area. The glass boats have a much better ride for me than the tin boats with the way they are designed. some of the other factors were storage space, speed, fishability, durability, contingency programs, safety and many more. For me the glass boat was just a more sensible buy for the types of fishing and boating I do. I feel much more safe in the glass boats with the way they handle and are not tipsy like some of the Tin boats are.

But on the other side the Tin boats do have some attributes over the Glass boats. One of the huge things that the Tin boats have over the Glass boats is their cost. The Tin boats are much cheaper in price than the Glass boats so someone on a budget or not looking to spend a ton of money can get out on the water easier than if they were to buy a Glass boat. But on the other side of that coin you do get what you pay for.

The debate on the Glass vs. Tin boats has been going on for years and will probably keep going on, the best thing someone can do when trying to decide which boat is for them is to take and look at what the boat will be used for, weather it's tournament fishing or just taking the family out on the water. The decision is up to the person behind the wheel.

First off, I have to give you props on your 8lb 7oz bass. That is what it is all about!

As for the 4" BBZ-1, I am working as fast as I can to have all the prototypes ready to show at ICAST 2008 ( mid July ) and ready to ship to the public in mid to late September 2008. I OK'd all the models on Friday the 9Th of this month and I have to say that I am blown away on the actions of these baits. Bottom line is that "time on the water" not only works on keeping up with your fishing skills, but working on designing lures is what the fishermen deserve now-a-days and that is what Spro and myself are all about. Just wait tell you see these bad boys swim.

I will have 3 models that will cover the entire top, middle, bottom, of the water column in a Floater, Slow Sink, and Fast Sink. There will be four colors that should cover all water clarity to start with, Natural Shad, Blue Back Herring, Sexy Lavender Shad, and the Dirty Shad. I have attached a picture of 3 of the color mock-ups without the Dirty Shad in the picture. I am still working on slight tweaking of the colors on the top fin and tail sections so these bait will even look better when they are finished.

Thanks for reading the Big Bass Zone the book and to help you understand more on directional changes, funnels, and proper techniques I put together a DVD with the help of Spro and Hollywood recently. You can take a quick look on www.spro.com. And one more thing Jeff, tell your buddy the next time a 10 pound monster is following your BBZ-1, all he has to do is a little directional change, fasten his seat-belt and hold on. Don't pull it away from a 10 pounder

Tune into Wire2Fish every few weeks for updates on the new lures that I am working on and tricks on putting more and bigger fish in the boat.

Take Care and Keep it in the BBZ

I have read your book and have a couple of the 8” BBZ 1 and can’t wait to get a couple of the new 4” versions. The 8” BBZ 1 is the most realistic lure I own. My buddy who was fishing with me on the trip were I caught my 8.7 pulled the BBZ 1 away from a 10lb+ bass! I just hope it is soon! I think this version will work great in my lakes here in Illinois! I look forward to hearing back from you.

In regards to your What’s Up Question about forums I frequent the Bass Fishing Home Page forum, Other Topics Board. I've been going there and participating for about 8 years now. When I first started visiting there, Tim Tucker, Angie Thompson and other industry elite were participating also. Because there was no registration and anyone could post, there were numerous occasions where some undesirable comments were made about folks and the industry elite quit posting. I do know they still monitor the boards though because I've heard it from some directly.

I think it's an important venue and a way to get fishermen's opinion's out there so things can be changed that may be detrimental to the sport.

I've been a strong advocate for women's professional bass fishing on the BFHP board. Many times I've felt like the "Lone Rangeress" out here when a host of folks of the male persuasion felt that there should not be a seperate tour for women. Some of those threads went on for days, even weeks.

The BFHP has been a source of constant entertainment. One of the funniest topics was "You might be a patch pirate if" (fill in the blanks) and one of the funniest fellas that ever graced the page is a guy named Omar.

Kim Striker, the Fishing Diva, made a post about wanting to learn to camp at tournaments to save some money and the next thing she knew she was invited on the Bassmaster show where the guys tricked out her truck and set it up for camping.

So yes I think the fishing forums are valuable contributors to our sport.

I enjoy your site. Thanks.
